3. The Postgraduate Cheat Code:
Graduate Assistantships (Masters & PhD)
If you already have a Bachelor’s degree from a Nigerian university (especially with a First Class or Second Class Upper),
do not look for scholarships. Look for Graduate Assistantships (GA).
This is an arrangement where the university waives your tuition 100%, and in exchange, you work 20 hours a week as a Teaching Assistant (TA) grading papers, or a Research Assistant (RA) working in a lab.
On top of free tuition, they pay you a monthly salary (stipend) of $1,500 to $3,000 to cover your rent and food.
The Programs:
This works best for STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and Social Sciences (Economics, Sociology).
Virtually every major state university (like Ohio State, Purdue, or University of Houston) offers these.
How to Apply:
* Find a Professor:
Go to university websites, look at the faculty page for your department, and find professors doing research you like.
* Send a “Cold Email”:
Write a polite, sharp email introducing yourself, your undergraduate project, and ask if they have space in their lab for a research assistant.
* The Official Application:
Once a professor says “I’m interested in your profile,” apply through the university graduate portal.
You will need your university transcripts, a Statement of Purpose (SOP), and 3 academic reference letters.
4. The Bridge: EducationUSA Nigeria (Your First Stop)
Even if a school offers you a 100% free ride, the process of applying is not free.
Courier fees for transcripts, SAT registration, and SEVIS/Visa fees can easily cost hundreds of thousands of Naira.
This is where EducationUSA comes in. They have official advising centers inside the US Embassies/Consulates in Lagos and Abuja.
